Best Man Speech Tips for Novices
Here are the most important things to remember when writing your speech…
Best Man Speech Tips for Noobs
Tip #1. Introduce Yourself
You may be one of the most important people in the groom’s life, but the majority of people at the wedding probably won’t know who you are. Remember, half of them were invited by the bride and the groom is likely to have quite a few family members and friends who have never even heard of you.
Tip #2. Cut the In-Jokes
Friends always have a million in-jokes between them, but the thing with in-jokes is that they’re rarely funny unless you were there or helped create them. Veiled references may get a laugh from the groom and a few close friends, but the rest of the guests won’t know what’s happening and you’ll lose them.
Tip #3. Focus on the Bride
Not throughout the entire speech, but you should always dedicate a paragraph or two to the bride. Talk about the things you like or admire about her and mention the positive effect she’s had on the groom. Even if you don’t particularly like her, she’s a part of your best mate’s life and you should make her feel welcome. Alienating her at the wedding makes it easy for her to alienate you down the line.
Tip #4. Don’t Think It’s a Roast
A few jibes are fine and part of general Irish banter, but you shouldn’t spend the entire speech ripping the groom apart and revealing every single embarrassing moment he’s ever experienced. This is one of the biggest days in his life and he’s asked you to be a part of it for a reason. Say a few nice things – it won’t kill you.
Tip #5. Remember the Grannies
Try to keep it clean. Cut out the swearing and don’t even think about featuring that trip to Amsterdam’s red light district. It’s a family event and even if most people are fine with that kind of thing in normal conversation, a wedding speech just isn’t the place.
